Perhaps more disturbing than the genocidal actions of a barbaric, tyrannical Chinese regime are the remarks by many Americans who defend it, using their platform of freedom here in the United States to defend the destruction of an entire ethnic group for money. China is currently carrying out the genocide of Uyghurs and is normalizing slavery in the modern age, in addition to human rights abuses seemingly too numerous to count. These include colonialist repression of multiple ethnic groups, religious groups and pro-democracy activists, as well as inflicting mental and physical torture on Uyghurs and other dissenting voices in China.
While all the acts of genocide are being met by the Chinese regime, it is incomprehensible that prominent Americans continue to feel so comfortable with their own complicity. Forced organ harvesting. The sterilization of Uyghur women. Forcible separation of children from their parents. Rape. Torture. Are these acts really so hard to condemn?
In response to reading his remarks that he would not condemn atrocities due to China being a “customer”, Campaign For Uyghurs Executive Director Rushan Abbas stated that “It’s appalling that here in the United States we have stronger genocide apologists than China. Those who cannot condemn something so blatantly evil have clearly chosen money over human lives, and Mark Cuban’s statements are in contrast to the values of humanity. A responsible leader would use such a platform to do the right thing rather than line his own pockets.”
Mark Cuban’s statements are disgusting, and Campaign for Uyghurs would like to call on the rest of the ownership and players who are part of the Dallas Mavericks to do the right thing and condemn defense of genocide, as well as for the National Basketball Association to carefully consider its stance.
American consumers cannot continue to stand for this. We ask that basketball fans across the globe use their voices to let the NBA and the Dallas Mavericks ownership know that we will not stand for this type of appalling hypocrisy in an American organization. Enough is enough.
