The World Uyghur Congress (WUC) is an international umbrella organization that represents the collective interest of the Uyghur people both in East Turkestan and abroad and promotes Uyghur human rights, Freedom and a peaceful and non-violent solution based on rule of law for the conflict in East Turkistan. For decades, the Chinese government has waged an intense and often brutal campaign to repress all forms of Uyghur culture and identity.  Application Deadline: January 15, 2020. POSITION

The WUC is currently looking for a Washington D.C. Representative to be based in Washington, D.C.

PRIMARY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Supporting and implementing advocacy projects to mobilize action by governments, multi-lateral bodies, civil society, and other actors
Developing and implementing a U.S.-focused strategy aimed at relevant U.S. institutions
Supporting WUC international advocacy work
advocacy work through the maintenance of relationships with states, NGOs and other UN actors
Developing and implementing media and communications strategies for global audiences
Leading and implementing youth human rights advocacy workshops
Liaising with the Uyghur community in the diaspora
Representing the WUC at meetings, external events, delivery of presentations and speeches
Preparing research for reports
Writing press releases and official statements as well as background documents and material

PROFILE OF THE CANDIDATE

Minimum three (3) years’ experience in human rights advocacy (or related advocacy) required
University or post-graduate level studies related to Political Sciences, International Relations, Law, Human Rights preferable
Knowledge of U.S. political system and related human rights mechanisms
Fluent English required; other languages (especially Chinese, Uyghur) are an asset
Excellent organisational and analytical skills
Good communication, negotiation and writing skills
Experience of advocacy and lobbying an advantage
Ability to work autonomously and within tight deadlines
Availability to travel occasionally
A commitment to promote human rights for the Uyghur people
Willingness to work longer hours depending on the demand is necessary
Knowledge of Uyghur human rights situation and/or human rights in China would be an advantage
